When was barnardos established




















Each of the four Centres has a range of support services, including crisis and respite foster care, semi-supported accommodation, childcare, visiting services groups and youth support. Barnardos has been instrumental in developing Temporary Family Care, a crisis and respite foster program to prevent premature removal of children from their families.

For children who are unable to live at home a permanency and adoption program has been established. During the late 's and 's, changes in social conditions effecting adolescents meant that increased emphasis has been placed on Barnardos adolescent programs.

Hohnen House was opened in , Kingston House in catering for Indo-Chinese refugees and a street work program in These programs have expanded and now include rural services. Dr Barnardo's Homes has been operating since when a party of eight boys left Dr Barnardo's Stepney Home to start a new life in Australia.

Barnardo's 'official' immigration scheme began in , with the first party of 47 boys leaving the United Kingdom for Australia in This building was not suitable and a home was eventually purchased in Ashfield. Housing up to 60 boys, this house was used as a place of temporary residence and as a convalescent home. The first party of girls arrived in They were allowed to come to Australia on the condition they worked as domestic staff for at least two years after their arrival.

Dr Barnardo's was originally located at Scarborough House, Kogarah but in moved to a mansion called Melrose at Ashfield. That house was renamed Barnardo House. It was a receiving home and served as a home for boys and girls who were on holidays, in between employment or convalescing from illness.

To celebrate the start of Black History Month, the charity is sharing its archive of photographs and poignant testimonials with the Observer, at last giving a voice to the orphans it welcomed into its homes years ago.

These unseen stories, released by the charity to mark the start of Black History Month , stand out not just because of their moving content, but because of the valuable glimpses they offer of some forgotten corners of history. Although wounded, he survived to be sold as a slave, and then freed, before sailing on to England.

Other children talked of dramatic rescues at sea, or of desperate times in Britain, living on the edge of survival in brothels or street gangs. Their words represent a wave of human suffering that brought many vulnerable youths to British ports, or later set orphans running from poverty back on track, after an early life in which they had been passed about like unwanted property.
