Joined 7 Oct Messages 6, It's perfectly legal. Oyster fares are charged based on where you touch out. Whilst you're travelling via a station where you would be charged a higher fare if you touched out there, that is irrelevant.
You're travelling entirely within the Oyster Pay as you Go area, so it's valid. It's no different to if you make a journey from Zone 8 to Zone 1 in the evening peak, say Watford High Street to Euston.
That doesn't mean you're obligated to touch out and back in at South Hampstead! Going via Watford Junction is in fact often the fastest way to get to High Street.
