Can i wash lined curtains in the washing machine

Velvet or lined curtains often require dry cleaning. If the color transfers to the cloth, take the curtains in for dry cleaning. If so, you can attempt to wash them at home at your own risk. When attempting to wash dry-clean-only curtains, launder one panel at a time in cold water, either by hand or on the gentle cycle.

Remove the drape promptly once the cycle completes and hang or lay it flat to dry. To prevent shrinking, never put a dry-clean-only curtain in the dryer. This also helps removable curtains stay cleaner between washings. Another option is to use a steam-cleaning wand. This method is only safe on machine-washable curtains. Steaming is fast and easy, though it may yield less optimal results compared to washing the drapes. If you need help tackling this and all your other household chores, call Molly Maid for help!

In the majority of cases, the curtains present in our homes are made from linen, silk, cotton or other synthetic fabrics. Establishing what material the curtains are made from not only tells us if they can indeed be washed in the washing machine, but also determines the temperature of the cycle to be set.

If the curtains to be washed are coloured, be sure to insert a colour catcher. Once the cycle is complete, hang your curtains out to dry, avoiding excessive creases and taking care to iron them as soon as possible, ideally when they are still slightly damp.

There are numerous different varieties of linen: gauze, wrinkled, linen-wool and canvas linen. These are lightweight linen curtains with a more open weave. To wash these curtains, we recommend rinsing them twice, without spin-drying, before washing thoroughly.

Once the washing cycle is complete, hang your curtains out to dry, vertically from a height if possible. Iron whilst still damp, taking care to always iron horizontally at a medium temperature. One way would be sprinkling the area with cornstarch or baking soda and gently pressing it in. Let that sit for an hour or so you may need to prop the drape on a horizontal surface, so the powder stays in place.

Another option is using an at-home dry cleaning kit. Dryel makes one. You can find them at Walmart, Target, and similar stores. Thank you, Katie. That is really helpful and i will follow your advice. And boy, you are fast! Thanks again. HI, I have very large thermal lined curtains. I have to clean them as my son has developed a cat allergy and we have 3.

I made the curtains, have tested that they withstand a 60oC wash I risked a small pair in same fabric and they are fine. I cant fit the big ones in my washing machine, any suggestions? I know I need to wash at about 60oC to degrade any allergen proteins in the curtains. HELP please! Is there any alternative to the bath? They have extra large washers, so your curtains should fit in without a problem.

Hi Katie. Ive been given 4 floor to ceiling formal curtains. They are made from wool as is the middle lining with a cotton lining on the back. Now Ive had a good look at them, they are also very grimy and smelly and covered in dog hair!. The label says dry clean but I dont think that will work on these.. Hi Linda.

Wool loses its shape easily when wet, which is probably why the label recommends dry-cleaning. Dryel is one brand. Your email address will not be published. Skip to content. Comment Policy Comments are moderated. Washing my first set of curtains as I type. I had never thought of doing it before.
